The "Nudge"

How to Recognize the "Nudge" from God

Sometimes the hardest part of sharing God's love is simply knowing when to act. If you are looking for an opportunity to hand someone a letter of encouragement, here is how you can recognize when God is nudging you to step forward:

  • A Sudden, Bold Thought:
You might look at someone and suddenly think, "They could use some encouragement," even if you weren't consciously thinking about giving out a letter. The thought often feels like it comes completely out of nowhere.
  • A Wash of Regret:
You get a strong feeling as you pass someone that you will miss a divine opportunity if you keep walking. For example, I was rushing to get home on Christmas Eve and walked right past a woman sitting all alone. By the time I reached the door, I was washed over with a heavy sense of regret. I turned right around and gave her a letter.
  • A Deep Sense of Knowing:
You simply notice one specific person standing out in a crowded room. On the day I found out I did not have to see a doctor, I walked out of the office and right in front of me was a woman who was obviously very sick. I walked straight up to her, said, "This is for you," and handed her an envelope. A huge smile instantly lit up her face—a smile that wasn't there just a moment before.
  • Keep Your Antennae Up:
Start by praying that God would show you exactly who needs to know He loves them. Then, stay alert and spiritually observant the moment you leave your house.
  • Honor the One-on-One:
Always wait for an individual moment. Never pass out more than one letter to a group of people at the same time—it is vital that the recipient feels uniquely seen and genuinely special.
